The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

Hey everyone!
Hope everyone's week is going well so far. It's been a while since we've last written a journal. However, we're noticing that a lot of you guys write them, and that they're being submitted to the Featured folder.

We would like everyone to know that we do not accept journal submissions here at STA. Your personal journal is a blog, not art, and our inboxes are already full with all of the incredible paintings/sketches/manipulations/craft-work we receive on a daily basis. We understand that some of you are trying to advertise for commissions, contests, and points, however we would also like everyone to know that we are not your personal billboard. If you wish to be featured or get your message out, please send us a note and when we have enough people, we will do a group journal feature. If your journal submission is in fact a literary piece, please submit it to DeviantART as a literary deviation and submit that to us.

We would also like to remind everyone that we do not allow advertising on our front page as well. So please do not post comments with messages such as "Please go check out so-and-so and vote for this here!" It takes away from the friendly atmosphere of the group when your front page is filled with nothing but ads, and it takes away from questions from our members because the mods have to wade through so many "Go look here!" messages before we can get to questions that need addressed. We will hide these comments when we see them, often with a warning that we do not allow them. If we see that you're determined to keep doing so, we will start marking them as spam. Hopefully it won't have to go much further than that, but if it does, we have no issue hitting the block button. Please don't make us do it, it makes for a bad day.

So please, do not submit your journals to the group, we WILL decline them.
